Spanish video game sales rise 31% in 2014.

The numbers are provided in the White Paper on the development of video games in Spain.

According to a report that was published on Tuesday by the sector, the video game production industry in Spain has increased its turnover by 31% in 2014, reaching 413 million euros. The industry has more than 400 registered companies, the majority of which are located in Madrid and Barcelona. The data are featured in the White Paper on Spanish Video Game Development, 2015 Edition, which was presented in Madrid on Monday by the Spanish Association of Video Game and Entertainment Software Production and Development Companies (DEV). The paper was presented by the DEV. The primary data on the video game business in Spain is included in the study, which was carried out with the assistance of ICEX and the participation of over two hundred enterprises operating within the sector. Additionally, Ignacio Pérez Dolset, the president of DEV, emphasized the significant opportunities that this industry presents, which are becoming “more global and competitive” in the world. The research, which incorporates information that was submitted by Spanish development studios through a survey that was carried out in May of last year, states that the turnover statistics rank the video game business in Spain among the most important national digital content industries. It is estimated that seventy new businesses were established in this sector in the year 2014, bringing the total number of companies working in this sector to more than four hundred. This places Spain at the top of the list in Europe in terms of the number of development studios that are now in operation.

There are five communities that make up the majority of customers.
In terms of expansion, projections suggest that the industry will expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR 2014-2018) of 24.7% by the year 2018. This would mean that the sector would achieve a turnover of 1,000 million euros by the end of the year, which would be three times the amount that was recorded in 2013. The video game business in Spain is nearly exclusively supported by national capital, accounting for 93% of the total. These games also have a significant export component, with 56% of their sales being directed toward international markets.

In 96% of businesses, there are fewer than fifty employees, and in fifty percent of those businesses, the number of employees is less than five. Five communities are responsible for 80% of the development studies that are conducted in this country. Of these, twenty-five percent are based in Madrid, while twenty-four percent are located in Catalonia. In contrast, the Valencian community, which accounts for 14% of the total, is the one that has had the most significant increase in the number of new studies in recent times. Andalusia and the Basque Country come in second and third, respectively.

Sixty-five percent of them have been employed for a period of less than five years, while twenty-eight percent have been employed for a period of less than two years. In terms of gender, women are continuing to increase their presence in the industry, despite the fact that they still only represent 18% of the total; in 2013, their participation was 16%. According to the report, “Gamification,” which is the process of applying video games to places that are not intended for play, and “serious games,” which are games that go beyond enjoyment, are developing trends in the industry.
