President Zelensky arrives for the meeting for Ukraine that is taking place in Tirana.

In the late evening of Tuesday, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, arrived in Tirana. He is scheduled to participate in the High Level Meeting titled “Ukraine – Southeast Europe” that will take place on Wednesday.

At the airport, he was greeted by Foreign Minister Igli Hasani, who wrote in a post on the social network X that this is “a key moment for promoting bilateral ties and standing in solidarity with Ukraine in its heroic fight against Russia’s aggression.” Hasani was the one who met him.

It is the first time that the President of Ukraine has traveled to Albania with his country. Through a live video link, he delivered a speech to the Albanian parliament two years ago, at a time when the Russian aggression against his country had only begun a few months earlier. Two months later, Prime Minister Rama paid a visit to Kiev as a demonstration of his support for the Ukrainian government.

Even more so, the meeting that will begin on Wednesday in Tirana, which is being co-organized with Kiev, is also an indication of the solidarity that this region of Europe, where not all of the countries are members of the European Union or NATO, lends to Ukraine and its resistance to Russian aggression.

A face-to-face meeting between the Prime Minister of Albania and the President of Ukraine, Zelensky, will take place in the premises of the government headquarters before to the beginning of the summit.

Following that, there will be a conference between the respective delegations, which will culminate in the signing of the Friendship and Cooperation Treaty between the two countries of Albania and Ukraine. Additionally, a special meeting between the foreign ministers of both countries is scheduled to take place earlier.

For the first part of the summit, President Zelensky and Prime Minister Rama will deliver a speech to kick off the proceedings. After that, everything will take place behind closed doors. Although it was one of the first countries to take a stance in favor of Ukraine, Albania has been unwavering in its support of all sanctions that have been placed on Russia.

In addition, Albania played a significant part in the matter of Ukraine during the past two years, when it was a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and it was in co-custody with the United States of America. In terms of its capabilities, Albania emerges as one of the most important countries for the contribution that is being made to Kiev, even with regard to the provision of arms.

One thing that stands out about the summit in Tirana is the fact that Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is not present. They have pointed out appearance and the Greek media, but it is in fact clearly related to the critical attitude of Athens towards the case of the elected mayor of Himara Fredi Beleri.

It has been learned that his non-participation was argued on the occasion of the anniversary of the serious railway accident that occurred on March 1 of the previous year in Thessaloniki.
