In Baltimore, Joe Biden promises to rebuild the bridge quickly

Joe Biden, the Vice President of the United States, made a vow on Friday to “move heaven and earth” in order to reconstruct the bridge that crumbled collapsed like a house of cards at the end of March in Baltimore, resulting in the deaths of six people.

“I am here to tell you that your country is behind you,” the Democrat said as he stood in front of the debris of the Francis Scott Key bridge, which still contains the container ship that was responsible for the collapse of the bridge.

When Joe Biden was running for re-election against his predecessor, Donald Trump, he promised that a new canal would be constructed by the end of May in order to restore access to the port of Baltimore, which is one of the busiest ports in the country.

At the beginning of the week, a temporary shipping lane was opened in order to facilitate the passage of vessels that are participating in rescue and clearance operations. However, the width of this corridor is not sufficient to permit the passage of major commercial vessels.

“I observed from the sky the bridge that was shattered, but on the ground, it was a united community that I saw,” the president was quoted as saying after flying over the region in a helicopter.

In an effort to garner support from Congress for his comprehensive funding plan, he stated, “We are going to make sure that everything is paid for.” This bridge will be rebuilt as swiftly as possible, and we will do all in our power to make that happen.

He also vowed that reconstruction will be done with “American labor and steel,” which is a wink to his industrial recovery programs, which he hopes will allow him to gain an advantage over Donald Trump in November. The 81-year-old Democrat, who is seeking to curry favor with the working-class electorate, is also making this promise.

Additionally, the president paid respect to the workers who had passed away, all of whom were immigrants from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. This was done in order to demonstrate his distance from his opponent’s growing harsh statements regarding the topic of immigration.

In the United States, the Port of Baltimore is the port that processes the most number of new automobiles, with over 800,000 vehicles passing through it in the previous year. This includes automobiles that were built in the United States and exported to other countries, as well as automobiles that were imported from other countries into the United States.

A period of up to three years is anticipated to be necessary for the reconstruction of the Baltimore Bridge, which is situated forty miles north of Washington.

The Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden, has pledged to “move heaven and earth” in order to assist Baltimore in recovering from a bridge collapse that rendered the city’s port inaccessible.

In addition, he stated that the government will “assist you in rebuilding and maintaining all of the business and commerce that is currently present.”

Six workers were killed as a result of the collapse, which also resulted in a big ship becoming trapped in one of the busiest ports on the East Coast. This port is utilized by businesses such as Amazon.

Up to this point, sixty million dollars (or forty-seven and a half million pounds) have been set aside for the cleanup operation.

It is quite probable that the ultimate cost of rehabilitating the bridge and clearing the waterway will be significantly more than what was originally estimated, with some legislators suggesting that it may reach hundreds of millions of dollars. One of them, David Trone, a Democrat from Maryland, told CBS, the United States partner of the BBC, that he thinks the cost may be as high as one billion dollars.

In a statement released on Friday, Vice President Biden reaffirmed his previous commitment to assist Baltimore in funding the recovery process and the rehabilitation effort.

“I have every intention of ensuring that the expense of constructing this complete bridge will be covered by the federal government. He appealed to Congress to give the go-ahead for money “as soon as possible,” saying that it should cover everything.

Officials in Baltimore made the announcement that dive teams had retrieved the body of a third construction worker at the site of the collapsed bridge a few hours after the president’s words were made public.

According to the Unified Command, the body of Maynor Yasir Suazo-Sandoval was discovered on Friday at approximately 10:30 to 10:30 local time.

It was last week that the bodies of two further victims, Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, who was 35 years old, and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, who was 26 years old, were found.

Colonel Roland Butler Jr., the head of the Maryland Department of State Police, stated that he was “fully committed to finding closure for each of these families.” Although the last three fatalities have not yet been located, Butler Jr. says he is “fully committed to finding closure.”

Prior to meeting with emergency personnel, Mr. Biden, who has family links to the city, took an aerial tour of the collapsed region during his visit. He was accompanied by Maryland Governor Wes Moore and other senior officials who were participating in the rescue effort.

Speaking in the suburb of Dundalk, which is located in Baltimore, Vice President Joe Biden stated that the federal government will “move heaven and earth” in order to replace the bridge “as quickly as humanly possible.” The cargo ship, the Dali, and the bridge that was destroyed were all clearly visible during his speech.

In addition, he stated that the reconstruction work will be carried out using “union labor and American steel.”

There are around 15,000 jobs that are connected to the port, making it an important economic hub.

“Folks, we all need to step up,” he stated further, “Amazon, Home Depot…and other companies all rely on this port, and they have committed to keep workers on payrolls.”

During his remarks, Mr. Biden took the opportunity to send a message to the families of the “working, strong, and selfless” men who had passed away as a result of the tragedy. He was also set to meet with these families during his visit. Immigrants from Mexico and Central America made up all six of the individuals.

“Never forget the contributions these men made to this city,” he concluded his remarks. “We’re going to keep working hard to recover each of them.”

Shalonda Young, the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, wrote a letter on April 5 to senior members of House and Senate committees that focus on infrastructure, transportation, public works, and the environment. In the letter, she stated that the administration would pursue “all avenues to recover the costs of past, current, and future work.”

Immediately following the collision, the “unified command” that was in charge of the response authorized two smaller temporary shipping channels in the region. These channels were opened to allow a limited amount of maritime traffic to pass through.

The officials have high hopes that they will be able to create a limited access canal that is 280 feet (80 meters) wide and 35 feet (10 meters) deep by the end of April. This channel will allow barge containers and other vessels that carry automobiles and equipment to travel in just one direction. According to a statement released by the unified command earlier this week, it is anticipated that the entire permanent channel will be free of obstructions and available for usage by the end of the month of May.–0ksn8ayy7a0z4af
